Historical Background of Jamestown

Jamestown, known to the Ga people as Ngleshie Alata, was founded in the 17th century around the British-built James Fort. The community flourished as a center of fishing, trade, and resilience.

Despite colonial influences, Jamestown retained its Ga traditions: the Homowo Festival, ancestral rites, and communal unity. Under Her Majesty’s custodianship, Jamestown’s identity is being reborn through cultural revival and seaside redevelopment.

Be part of the transformation. Together, we can build a stronger, prouder Jamestown.
